Environment

Castelnuovo is a small village situated in the Marches Region on the border with Romagna, above the Ventena valley. The territory is prevalently hilly with steep coastline peaks and very few flat areas. The principal river is the Ventena stream. The temperate climate is influenced by the closeness of the Adriatic Sea.

Population

Today Castelnuovo is almost completely uninhabited except for a few families and the ex miller who live in the valley of the village. In the 50s Castelnuovo’s population reached just about six hundred inhabitants.

Economy

In spite of everything, it’s the agricultural activities which keep the economy of this ancient land alive, in particular the cultivation of cereals (grain, corn and oats) and fruit, especially grapes, from which a high quality wine is made. The breeding of sheep also plays an important part with their meat, milk and derivates.

Flora and Fauna

The landscape is typical of the Apennines with a prevalence of oaks, poplars and a rich variety of game among which wild boars, deer, hares and pheasants.
